Rolls Crescent Primary School – PSHE Curriculum

Intent

At Rolls Crescent Primary School, our PSHE curriculum enables our children to become healthy (both physically and mentally), well-adjusted, independent and responsible members of society, who are ready for the personal challenges that they may face in their future lives. We follow Jigsaw, which offers a comprehensive programme for primary PSHE including statutory relationships and health education, giving children relevant learning experiences to help them navigate their world and to develop positive relationships with themselves and others. Our PSHE program has a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. PHSE lessons also include mindfulness, allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus. We aim to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. In EYFS, children’s personal, social and emotional well-being is developed using the three key strands of: managing self, building relationships, self-regulation. The JIGSAW programme is used to support this. We celebrate the rich diversity that we have in our school and carefully tailor our approach so that we are sensitive to the different needs and views within our community. Our PSHE programme is heavily linked in with our work as a school on the rights within the CRC. We learn about the importance of rights, respecting the rights of others and how to become global citizens. We are passionate about using our PSHE programme to develop a rights respecting ethos throughout our school, which involves not just learning about rights but putting rights into practice every day.

Implementation

PSHE is delivered through a structured and progressive curriculum across all year groups, using a combination of:

  • Weekly lessons based on a recognised scheme (e.g., Jigsaw or Think Equal), tailored to our pupils’ needs.
  • Thematic weeks and assemblies (e.g., Anti-Bullying Week, Mental Health Awareness, Internet Safety Day, Black History Month and Safety focusses).
  • Cross-curricular links with subjects such as Science, PE, and Computing.
  • Circle time and reflective activities to promote discussion and emotional development.
  • Safeguarding and SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) education integrated throughout the curriculum.
  • Staff receive regular CPD to ensure high-quality delivery and consistency across the school.

Think Equal Programme – EYFS PSHE Overview

Purpose and Vision

  • End discriminatory mindsets and cycles of violence.
  • Promote equality, empathy, emotional literacy, and peaceful conflict resolution.
  • Provide children with the skills and values needed for healthy relationships and responsible citizenship.
  • It is rooted in mental health, social justice, and neuroscience, recognizing that ages 3–6 are a critical window for shaping attitudes and behaviours.

 Curriculum Structure

The programme is divided into three levels, each aligned with EYFS developmental stages:

 Impact

Our PSHE curriculum at Rolls Crescent is of high quality, well thought-out, and planned to demonstrate progression. If children are keeping up with the weekly lessons and the overarching curriculum, they are deemed to be making good progress. We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

  • Reflection on standards achieved against planned outcomes.
  • Formative assessment of pupils’ progress in skills and knowledge.
  • Celebration of learning each half term aligned with the school’s thematic driver.
  • Pupil voice to gather feedback on their experience and understanding of PSHE.
  • Children articulate their understanding of key concepts and demonstrate empathy and respect.
  • Assessment for learning: Teachers use formative assessments and reflective journals to monitor progress.
  • Behaviour and wellbeing indicators: Improved emotional regulation, positive relationships, and reduced incidents of conflict.
  • Community engagement: Pupils actively participate in school life and contribute to the wider community.
  • Readiness for the next stage: Pupils leave Rolls Crescent equipped with the skills and attitudes needed for secondary education and life beyond school.
  • We regularly review our PSHE provision to ensure it remains relevant, inclusive, and impactful.
