Music
At Rolls Crescent, our music curriculum is underpinned by the CLIC trust ‘active ingredients’. These active ingredients have been chosen using research based evidence on how children learn and how they commit knowledge to their long term memory.
Intent (Why do we teach what we teach?)
At Rolls Crescent we aim to inspire our pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians as well as to increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement, mental health and well-being. Music is a powerful tool in the development of language and early reading and we believe that music makes learning exciting and engaging, developing critical thinking and enabling our pupils to express themselves in unique and individual ways.
Reflecting the richly diverse community within our school, we want to ensure that our pupils experience a wealth of musical experiences, through listening to live music, singing, learning an instrument, performing and composing. We want our pupils to understand the value of music in the wider community and provide opportunities for them to perform with outer groups within the community, in a variety of venues in our local area and for a wide range of audiences.
We aim to do this by giving pupils the opportunities to:
· Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.
· Learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.
· Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.
Implementation (How do we teach it?)
Music is embedded throughout our weekly timetables through music assemblies, curriculum lessons and wider opportunities. We use the Charanga scheme of work.
A Charanga lesson usually follows the following structure: Listening to and appraising a piece of music, warm up and flexible games to warm up our voices and our bodies, learning how to sing or play a piece of music and a final performance piece.
In the EYFS, our pupils are given the opportunity to hear and listen to music, vocalise and sing, move and dance and explore and play through continuous provision and guided activities. Reception children begin to follow the Charanga scheme of work.
In Key Stage 1 these skills and knowledge continue to develop through music lessons using Charanga. Pupils in Years 1 and 2 come together to sing on a weekly basis.
In Key Stage 2, music continues to be taught using Charanga. In addition, Years 3 and 4 learn the ukulele and Years 5 and 6 learn the African drums. These lessons are taught by external providers and specialist teachers from One Education. Our pupils then have the opportunity to further their development through clubs including ukulele, steel pans, drumming, guitar and choir. Throughout the key stages, our pupils are also given regular opportunities to perform for their peers, parents, the community and in a range of venues in our local area.
At Rolls Crescent, music provides opportunities for all pupils to thrive and excel, regardless of the barriers to learning. Our pupils for whom English is an additional language, can express themselves and build confidence through music and our SEND pupils thrive in our music clubs, drumming and ukulele lessons, developing their confidence in order to express themselves and achieve their potential.
Impact report (What is the impact of music at Rolls Crescent and how do we know?)
Children will leave Rolls Crescent having an appreciation of different musical genres. They will have taken part in musical performances through playing different types of instruments and singing. By listening, studying and learning many different types of music, children at Rolls Crescent will have received a well-rounded musical education that promotes a love of music throughout their lives. To measure impact, videos are taken of final pieces at the end of a unit to check for progression. The music lead will gauge pupil’s reactions to music through pupil voice. The annual music concert is also used as a way of measuring children’s progress by the end of the year.
